Not Just Stress: A Man's Guide to High-Functioning Depression

  • Course
  • 7 Lessons

For men in their 30s-50s who don't fit the picture of depression they've seen on TV — high achievers, providers, "the strong one" — whose depression shows up as irritability, anger, exhaustion, escapism, or physical complaints instead of visible sadness.

Built by a dual-licensed FNP-BC/PMHNP-BC. This course combines the physical workup (sleep, fatigue, testosterone, thyroid) with the psychiatric lens (masked depression, anger as a mood symptom, why men underreport) to help you recognize what's actually going on and do something about it before it costs you your health, your relationships, or your career.

Companion Workbook (Download)

Module 1: Depression That Doesn't Look Like Depression

Why standard depression checklists miss so many men — irritability, anger, numbness, and escapism as legitimate presentations of depression, not just "a bad mood" or "being an ass." How social conditioning trains men not to name what they're feeling, and why that delay has real costs.

Module 1: Depression That Doesn't Look Like Depression

Module 2: The Body Side — Ruling In, Ruling Out

The physical picture: chronic fatigue, disrupted sleep, low libido, and the "is this testosterone or is this depression" conversation. What labs and workups are worth asking your provider for, how physical and psychiatric causes overlap and compound each other, and why treating only one side rarely works.

Module 2: The Body Side — Ruling In, Ruling Out

Module 3: Why Men Don't Ask for Help (and What to Do Instead)

The real barriers — stigma, the "fix-it-yourself" identity, fear of being seen as weak or unreliable — named honestly instead of lectured about. Lower-friction entry points than traditional talk therapy for men who aren't ready for that yet, and how to talk to a primary care provider about it in five minutes.

Module 3: Why Men Don't Ask for Help (and What to Do Instead)

Module 4: The Escape Valves

Overwork, alcohol, screens, porn, and risk-taking as self-medication, not moral failure. How to recognize when a normal outlet has become a way to avoid feeling anything, and concrete, less costly alternatives that still provide the same relief.

Module 4: The Escape Valves

Module 5: Anger, Numbness, and Connection

Building emotional vocabulary beyond "fine" and "pissed off." Practical scripts for reconnecting with a partner, kids, or friends without turning every conversation into a therapy session, and why isolation is both a symptom and a multiplier.

Module 5: Anger, Numbness, and Connection

Module 6: Your Plan — When to Get Help and How to Sustain Change

A decision framework for when self-directed tools aren't enough and what real treatment options look like (therapy modalities, medication, combined care) without the stigma-loaded language. Turning the whole course into one sustainable 90-day plan, plus how to keep it going.

Module 6: Your Plan — When to Get Help and How to Sustain Change

What's Included

  • High-Functioning Depression Self-Check — a symptom checklist built around how depression actually presents in men (irritability, anger, escapism, numbness, physical symptoms), not just the standard checklist

  • Physical vs. Psychological Symptom Tracker — a simple daily/weekly log to help separate out sleep, energy, mood, and physical symptoms worth raising with a provider

  • "Talking to Your Doctor" Script — a structured, low-friction way to raise this with a primary care provider in a short appointment

  • Escape Valve Audit Worksheet — a private, judgment-free tool for identifying which coping habits have become avoidance and what to try instead

  • Emotional Vocabulary & Connection Builder — a reference card of words beyond "fine"/"pissed," plus scripts for reconnecting with a partner or friend

  • 90-Day Plan — turns the course into one phased plan for what to change, when to get more support, and how to keep it going

Family Nurse Practitioner & Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

I'm dual-licensed as a Family Nurse Practitioner and a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, which lets me look at men's mental health from both the physical and psychiatric side at once. I built this course after seeing so many men come in for fatigue, irritability, or "just stress," when what was actually going on was depression that never looked like the textbook picture. My goal here is to help you recognize what's really happening in your body and mind, and to give you a low-pressure way to start doing something about it, whether that's a conversation with your provider or a change you make on your own.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before enrolling.

Is this the same as therapy or medical care?

No. This is educational content, not therapy, psychiatric care, or a substitute for individualized medical treatment. It's designed to help you understand what high-functioning depression looks like and give you language and tools to bring to a real conversation with a provider, or to start making changes on your own.

Do I need a diagnosis before taking this course?

Not at all. A lot of men taking this course have never been formally diagnosed with anything — they just know something feels off. This course is actually designed to help you recognize the signs of high-functioning depression in the first place, so you can decide what to do next.

How long do I have access?

Lifetime access. Enroll once and revisit the material whenever it's useful — there's no deadline and no time limit.

What if I'm already seeing a provider about this?

Great — this course is designed to complement that relationship, not replace it. Several modules cover the physical workup men often skip (thyroid, sleep apnea, testosterone, and other causes that can look like depression), which can be useful information to bring to your existing provider.

What if I'm in crisis right now?

Please don't wait on this course. If you're having thoughts of harming yourself, contact your provider, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), or go to your nearest emergency room right away.

Important Information

This course is educational content created by a licensed nurse practitioner with psychiatric-mental health expertise, not individualized medical or psychiatric care. Enrolling does not create a provider-patient relationship. It's designed to help you recognize the physical and psychological signs of high-functioning depression and take practical first steps — it is not a substitute for a medical evaluation, a formal mental health assessment, or treatment, and depression can overlap with or be worsened by underlying medical conditions that deserve individualized evaluation.

If you are having thoughts of suicide or self-harm, please contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (call or text 988 in the U.S.), go to your nearest emergency room, or contact your medical or mental health provider right away rather than relying on this course alone. If your symptoms are severe, worsening, or affecting your safety or the safety of others, please seek care immediately.
